HTMR-100 is WALK AWAY SAFE

SMALL MODULAR REACTOR

Walk-Away Safety: Built on Physics, Not Intervention

The HTMR-100 is designed with inherent “walk-away safety”, a core principle of Generation IV nuclear engineering. This means the reactor is structured so that, in any credible shutdown or fault scenario, it will automatically move towards a safe, stable condition without the need for active intervention by operators or external power systems.

Unlike earlier generation designs that rely on powered cooling systems, pumps, or operator action, the HTMR-100 uses passive safety principles grounded in physics. Heat removal is maintained through natural processes such as thermal conduction, convection, and radiation, supported by the reactor’s inherent design geometry and materials. This ensures that residual heat is safely dissipated even in the absence of grid power or active control systems.

The use of robust TRISO fuel further reinforces this safety case. The fuel is engineered to retain fission products within multiple protective layers, even under extreme temperature conditions, significantly reducing the risk of release under accident scenarios.

In practical terms, this means that if all active systems were to be unavailable, the reactor does not require emergency action to remain safe. It transitions naturally into a cooled, stable state, without escalation.

For investors, regulators and host communities, walk-away safety represents a fundamental shift in risk profile. It replaces dependency on human response and mechanical redundancy with a design that is intrinsically stable by nature.

The real question is not how fast nuclear can be built, but how quickly the world can adapt to building it differently.
